A Take on Take On…Me

Life in reverse (with lots of water and balls)
February 15, 2012
Such a simple concept, but this is undeniably fun. I rewound this many times to see parts more than once (or twice….or three times….) and while there are too many fun moments to single out, I will give a special shout-out to the “viking”. You made me laugh out loud. Cheers.
And kudos for using “Brazil”. I’ll always love any version of that song thanks to the film of the same name.

somebody that I used to know

Musically I’m fairly stuck in the past. My favorite activity remains placing an old piece of vinyl on the turntable, whether it be familiar or unknown, and most usually from the 70s, which remain my favorite decade for music. I do pick up current releases on vinyl as well, but I tend not to listen to those as frequently. I have a small dj record case (bright yellow, no less) that I intend to to get into a habit of usually containing a mix of new releases, current obsessions (new & old) and unknown recent acquisitions.
I’ve been enjoying a slate of more recent musical discoveries online at the moment, including the one below. I was really taken with both the music and creativity of the accompanying visuals. I’ve also been breaking my habit of not really paying attention to lyrics, so something as raw as the content here really hits home much harder than it would have before. I suddenly felt as emotionally naked as the people in the clip.

Ready or Not
January 22, 2012
Well, today is my 40th birthday — and what a better way to celebrate than having Jungalero and Funkschnecke make an appearance at my home for the weekend!
As I’m now “middle-aged”, it’s important for me to keep in shape. Gone are the days of my 20′s physique – and to motivate me towards my fabulous 40′s, what a better find for the three of us this weekend than Alan Thicke’s tremendous ode to mid-life fitness during the Crystal Light National Aerobic Championship!
Hot.
This is amazing.

I’m so glad people still take extra time to create something as purely joyful as this. And then share it with the world.

Also spotted there is another great time lapse video documenting last year’s Coachella festival. I love that type of photography that makes everyone look like a miniature.
Pretty Good

Better than any Yule Log video, that.
Dancing in deep water

Quite a few times we’ve gone to see a band at at show and an opening act that I’ve never heard of totally blows me away, often stealing the show from the main act. This happened, back in the day, when P J Harvey opened for David J at a small venue in Chicago. And again, the earth’s orbit shifted when Elliott Smith opened for the Tindersticks around the time of Good Will Hunting (although, for me, NO one could steal the show from the Tinderstick back then)
Recently we saw the band Peggy Sue open for a band we wanted to see. We were completely seduced by Peggy Sue’s intertwining vocals, their strong rapport with a relatively sparse audience, their coolness and humor in the face of technical mishap, and especially their captivating musicianship. They bring a blend of dark brooding rock and tribal/folk music and what seems like a myriad of other influences with lyrics that feel honest, a bit raw and provocative. I wished so badly that they had been the main act and allowed to play longer… Thus I’ve listened to nothing but Peggy Sue since that show.

So, here we are on All Hallow’s Eve. Let’s put a soundtrack to the day, shan’t we?
Florence and the Machine – “Shake It Out”
Nothing says Halloween these past few years than Florence, whose new album is released on November 1st in the US. And she wisely set her latest video at a costume party…How festive!
Siouxsie – Obsession
The Queen of Dark brings the Banshees classic about a creepy stalker to an orchestral setting. And I think she’s dressed as a strutting rooster.
This Mortal Coil – Box Set
Not necessarily scary, but nothing gets you in the goth space than the complete recordings of This Mortal Coil, treated this week to a stunning remaster and re-release by 4AD. I don’t know what’s more exquisite; the deep rich soundscape the remastering brings forth, or the absolutely stunning visual created by graphic designer Vaughan Oliver in re-imaging the original releases in a new an profound way. A set almost meant to be touched and stared at as much as listened to.
Vampire Club – Voltaire
Lest we take ourselves to seriously — here’s a bloody tribute to the Hot Topic shoppers amongst you!
Booo-ya.
